Are you interested in helping immigrant students and their families?
Members of the UUCUC Immigrant Justice Team met recently with Lucia Maldonado, Latino Parent Liaison for Urbana School District #116, to discuss how UUCUC members might serve this community as it faces new immigration and deportation threats. Ms. Maldonado identified several areas of potential need, including provision of emergency food and shelter for students when one or both parents are taken into custody, leaving behind a child or a single parent with a child; providing transportation and/or accompaniment to medical, immigration related appointments, or court appearances; discretionary funds to help students pay fees, purchase shoes and uniforms; and the potential need for temporary or long-term guardianship.
You can learn more about the challenges immigrant students will face in the months ahead and how you might help out at an upcoming informational meeting at the church on Sunday, February 16 at noon in the Children’s Chapel. For more information about the meeting, contact Pam Richart, chair of the Immigrant Justice Team, at pamelarichart1@gmail.com. We hope to see many of you there!
